Red Dog Poker Facts

Red Dog Poker

The name Red Dog Poker can be misleading at times. Although the name contains the word ‘Poker’, this game is not a child of the Poker family. In Red Dog Poker, you don’t play to win over other players or against the banker like in all the Poker games.   As it is different from the traditional Poker, the rank of the hand also follows the suite. These differences make it very necessary that you first understand the rules properly and then go for trying your luck.

Introduction:

Red Dog was initially played in US in the beginning of the 19th century. In those days, it was called as ‘in-between’, and then later on, it was named as the Red Dog. It was named ‘in-between’ because of the manner in which it was played. If the player has his third card in-between the other two cards drawn, then he wins the game. Rules are explained below.

The life of the game in-between was a short one. As the rules of the game were very simple, it became very easy for players to cheat. And also on the other hand, Poker was becoming increasingly popular. In the popularity of the Poker games, in-between was off the scene for some time.

It was around 1930 that gambling was legalized in Las Vegas and then the Red Dog was launched again. Actually, Red dog is a better version of the old in-between game with some added rules, which made it interesting and so it is still surviving in the gambling world.

The ranks of the cards differ from the other Poker games. A normal 52 deck is used to play this game. In Red Dog, Ace is the highest ranked card with 2 being the lowest. The cards from 2 to 10 have their worth as per their face value. The cards Jack, Queen, King, and Ace have their values increasing from 11 to 14 respectively.

Rules:

The game is very easy to play. First you place your bet and then the dealer begins his job and deals two cards which are faced up. You win the game if the third card that the dealer deals lies in between the first two cards. So, to win this game, you have to predict that whether the third card will lie between the first two cards or not. Once the first two cards are placed, the player can raise his bet. He has the option to stick to his previous bet as well.

The Prize:

The money that you win depends on the difference between the first and the second card. The smaller the difference, the more you pocket the money. If the third card doesn’t fall in the spread of the first two, the game is over for you as you lose. Supposing that both of your cards are consecutive, then it is a sort of draw and you get your bet back. It is called as a push. On the other hand, if both the cards are of equal denomination, then a third card will be drawn, and if it equals the previous two, then you win money in 11:1 ratio else it will again be considered as a push.
